Lord Vishnu is Narayan or Supreme Consciousness present in all. Padma, shankh, chakra and gada are the symbols of Lord Vishnu which He carries in His four hands. The upper right hand holds the chakra, the lower right hand holds the shankh , the upper left hand holds the Lotus and the lower left hand holds the gada. The Lotus is the symbol of creation. Lord Vishnu is also named as Padmanabh, due to the Lotus (Padma) which springs form the navel (Nabhi). The Lotus in Lord Vishnu's hand symbolises that He can endow the highest spiritual experience from the path of yog (the power from His yog nidra). Panchjanya which means ' born of five ' is the Shankh or conch of Lord Vishnu. It represents the first manifestation of the articulate language - AUM. All forms of the universe are effects of the premeval sonic vibrations. Thus the conch is the symbol of the origin of existence. Kaumodaki which means ' the stupifier of the mind 'is the gada or mace of Lord Vishnu. The mace is the form of strength or power and the intellect is the highest power , by the power of mind one person can control thousands . The mace is thus symbol of intellect (buddhi) or the power of knowledge. Sudarshan Chakra is a spinning disc like weapon , literally meaning ' disc of auspicious vision ' having 108 serrated edges used by Lord Vishnu to destroy the enemies. It is also the symbol of the mind.
