This painting is inspired from, Natraj pose of Shiva. Natraj is a depiction of Shiva as the divine cosmic dancer, from whom 'TANDAVA' (a dance style in Indian Classical Dance) has evolved.
The word Natraj, can be further divided into two words, NAT, meaning dance and drama and RAJ or RAJA meaning 'The King'. As per Hindu Mythology, Shiva, is believed to be the lord of dance.
It is also believed that, Shiva performs the divine functions of creation, destruction and preservation, in his Natraj form only. This form of Shiva is attributable to illusion and trance, known as MAYA. Hence among all other forms of Shiva, Nataraj is considered as one of highest form.
Natraj is not only the epitome of masculine beauty immersed in divine dance, but his each body movement and poster is very symbolic and find it's roots deep in Hinduism.
Here, Shiva is dancing within a closed arch of flames called PRABHA MANDALA, which is symbolical representation of the sacred cosmic fire as per hindu cosmology, which creates and consumes everything, in a cyclic manner, thus representing the 'cycle of life'.
Shiva's right hand is depicted in 'Abhaya Mudra' as a sign of reassurance and protection and the left hand crosses his chest, concealing his heart from view, which represents TIRODHANA, which means concealment. This gesture represents the power of concealment and the ability to protect and hide what needs to be protected.
His long, matted tresses, are depicted as loose and flying out, due to his ecstatic dance. However, his calm demure with a light smile on his face represents peace and tranquility, despite being immersed in the contrasting forces of the universe. Hence, representing the balance of Nature.
