Artist's Notes

Kalinga and Kanchi were arch nemesis for years. To end their enmity, Kalinga king Purushottam Deva sent marriage proposal with Kanchi princess Padmavati. Kanchi naresh Salubha Narasimha Deva agreed to the marriage. Purushottam Deva invited him to Puri to attend the annual Rathyatra of Prabhu Jagannath. When Kanchi naresh couldnÕt attend the Rathyatra, he sent his prime minister for the occasion. Kalinga kings considered themselves to be the greatest survitor of Jagannath and it is a custom for the Kalinga king to sweep the path through which JagannathÕs procession would be carried on from Mandir to the chariot. Seeing the Kalinga king sweeping the path, the Kanchi prime minister felt contempt. He returned to Kanchi and told Kanchi naresh everything and refered Purushottam Deva as Chamar. When Kanchi naresh broke the wedding, Kalinga announced a war and defeated Kanchi. Purushottam Deva took Padmavati with him and ordered his prime minister Bidyadhara to find a sweeper and marry off the princess with him. Bidyadhara took Padmavati to his home and kept her like daughter. After one year, when Purushottam Deva was sweeping the path of Jagannath, Bidyadhara brough Padmavati and said that currently, Purushottam Deva is the most eligible sweeper to marry Padmavati. After asking Padmavati whether she has consent in the marriage, Purushottam Deva married her.
